Delhi LG Controversy: BJP Govt.’s Case Withdrawal Triggers Debate

New Delhi: The newly sworn in BJP-led government in Delhi has preferred to withdraw several court cases against the office of the Lieutenant Governor (LG), effectively shortening the already lengthy legal battles between the Delhi government and the centre. It had been going on for quite some time with all kinds of disputes, which characterized the previous AAP government.

The cases that are being withdrawn comprise sensitive issues like the appointment of the DERC chairman, the funding of the Delhi Jal Board, and the appointment of lawyers in the riot cases in Delhi. Sources said on Wednesday.

The legal confrontations between the AAP-driven Delhi government and the LG's office have become the fulcrum of Delhi's politics for quite some time. The opening of cases became a culture of the AAP, with accusations being levied against previous LGs, namely Najeeb Jung, Anil Baijal, and VK Saxena, for interfering with its policies and programs. A feature confusion was regarding the appointment of public prosecutors in the Northeast Delhi riots cases of 2020, with the AAP alleging interference from the central government.

With the recent Delhi elections, the AAP suffered a crushing defeat, and its number in the 70-member Assembly has been reduced to just 22 seats. This has paved the way for the BJP to claim 48 seats and go on to form a new government under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Sources in the Delhi government say that the withdrawal of these cases is part of a broader plan for good governance and to quell the ongoing strains with the LG and central authorities.
